Wedding ring lost in wet sand at the Duna Verde dog beach, Caorle: metal detector search, service also covers Porto Santa Margherita

What happened

The request came from a German tourist staying at San Francesco camping in Duna Verde, a Caorle seaside area. The wedding ring, a simple yellow gold band engraved inside with 'In perpetum Julia', slipped off in the sea while he was in the water with his dog. The spot was the dog beach, the sandy area where dogs are allowed and the shoreline is shallow and mixed with tidal pools.

How we searched

We searched with an underwater metal detector and a sand scoop, marking out a progressively wider area around the indicated spot. Duna Verde's dog beach has fine sand and shallow water: good for searching, but also easily churned by bathers and dogs. We swept in parallel lines, checking every weak signal, and extended the search a few metres beyond the reported area in case the ring had been shifted by water movement. We use the same method for every search in Caorle and Porto Santa Margherita.

Why it was not found

Unfortunately the search did not succeed. The most likely reason is the time elapsed between the loss and our call: on a busy beach like those at Duna Verde, Caorle or Porto Santa Margherita, even a few hours of people and dogs walking over the area can push a light ring beyond practical depth, or move it several metres away. Low tide and tidal pools also made the exact point unstable. This case reminds us how important it is to contact us immediately, before the sand 'swallows' the item.
